CINNAMON:
BOTANICAL ORIGIN: Cinnamomum loureirii
FAMILY: Lauraceae
PART USED:Dried bark
CLOVE:
BOTANICAL ORIGIN: Eugenia caryophyllus
FAMILY: Myrtaceae
PART USED:Dried flowering bud
THEORY:
Tannin (vegetable tannin, i.e. a type of biomolecule, as opposed to modern synthetic tannin) is an astringent, bitter plant polyphenolic compound that binds to and precipitates proteins and various other organic compounds including amino acids and alkaloids. Tannins have molecular weights ranging from 500 to over 3,000 (Gallic acid esters) and up to 20,000 (proanthocyanidins). Tannins are incompatible with alkalis, gelatin, heavy metals, iron, lime water, metallic salts, strong oxidizing agents and zinc sulfate, since they form complexes and precipitate in aqueous solution.
REQUIREMENTS:
Drug extract, Test tubes, Pipette, 5% Ferric chloride solution, Bromine water
PROCEDURE:
Prepared 10% w/v extract by boiling 10g of powdered drug with 100ml of distilled water for 5-10 minutes. Then filtered the extract and carried out the identification tests with the filterate.
USES:
§ Tannins are an important ingredient in the process of tanning leather.
§ Wood adhesive
§ Antiparasitic effects
§ Antibacterial
§ Precipitate proteins
§ Antiviral
